From bid and ask to stop-loss and margin level — a working glossary of the terms every trader meets first.
≈ 5 min read
Bid: the price at which you can sell. Ask: the price at which you can buy. Spread: the difference between them — a core trading cost. Pip / point: the standard unit of price movement for an instrument.
Market order: execute now at the best available price. Limit order: execute only at a chosen price or better. Stop order: becomes a market order once a trigger price trades. Stop-loss: a stop order attached to a position to cap downside. Take-profit: closes a position at a chosen favourable level.
Long: a position that gains if price rises. Short: a position that gains if price falls. Equity: account balance plus the running result of open positions. Margin level: equity relative to margin in use — the number that determines how close an account is to a stop-out.
