Index instruments track baskets of leading shares — a way to take a view on entire markets like US technology or European blue chips through a single position.
What indices are
A stock index measures the combined performance of a defined group of companies — the largest US technology names, the thirty industrial leaders, the top hundred UK listings. Index trading instruments track those benchmarks so you can trade the aggregate rather than picking individual shares.
Because indices respond to the macro picture — rates, growth, risk appetite — they are often the first market traders watch each morning and the cleanest way to express a broad view.

An index instrument aggregates dozens or hundreds of shares into a single price. That dilutes single-company surprises but concentrates exposure to the broad economic cycle.
Interest-rate expectations, inflation data and earnings seasons move indices more than any individual headline. The economic calendar matters here as much as the chart.
Index instruments follow underlying exchange sessions, and prices can gap between the close and the next open — a key risk for positions held overnight.
Quiet weeks and violent weeks tend to cluster. Position sizing that survives the violent ones is what keeps an account durable.
